Mysterious and Magical Ch. 5

Since then, Chris had turned into a secret agent. He slithered along walls and peeped around corners, making a fool of himself.

"Chris!" I hissed one day as he hid in his locker twitching at every sound.

"Shh! He could be here!"

"Chris, to blend in we actually have to do the same as the others, this is just standing out in a crowd."

Chris pulled his head out and grumbled in shame.

"Where is Ruby?" He mumbled.

That was a good question. I didn't know myself. Last I saw her she was explaining a sudden trip to the loo, which now that I think about it, do vampires even go to the toilet?

"Chris, I'm going to find Ruby," I told him, grabbing my art book and pencil case.

"Okay," Chris whispered from his locker as I walked away.

I walked down the corridor towards the big girls' bathroom door. I pushed it open and walked into the wet, damp bathroom to find Ruby leaning on the sink bench staring into her own reflection. She must have heard me come in but she did not tear her eyes from the mirror. Perhaps she hypnotized herself?

I didn't like the bathroom much. It was small, wet and uncomfortable. The sink was dripping with with water where the tap must have gone crazy and splashed water everywhere. Ruby was leaning right into the water without a care. Her left hand was pressed into her right shoulder.

"Ruby?" I whispered. Other girls walked past us giggling at Ruby's blank expression which had gone on for a long time.

Ruby blinked but didn't tear her eyes away. But she slowly lowered her left hand, revealing a large tear in her school blouse on her right shoulder. A deep cut was there, showing muscle inside. If she was human, blood would be squirting out of the wound.

"Misty," Ruby finally says and turns to me with a worried look. "He knows. Dear God, he knows." Ruby gave a choke which could have been a vampire cry. She covered the wound with her hand again, hideing it from other girls.

"What happened?" I asked Ruby but she shook her head, and swallowed hard. Then the bell rang.

"Are you coming, Ruby?" I ask and hope she would nod. As I guessed she shook her head. I didn't want to be late for one of my favorite subjects, art, but I didn't want to leave Ruby either.

"I might go home," Ruby tells me. "You will meet me there later, yeah? With Chris?" Ruby nods at me as she straightens herself up. I nod at her and walk next to her out of the bathrooms.

Ruby walks to her locker and dumps everything she doesn't need, and waves to me. I notice that the hallway is almost empty, so I wave back and run towards art, hopeing that Mrs. Macing won't mind me being late.

I turn around to give Ruby one more goodbye wave.

But she had disappeared.

Almost like she hadn't been there at all.

Ah those vampire powers, they make me envious sometimes.
